The 2018 Montagu Cup final was postponed on Easter Monday (April 2nd) because of snow. It was played on Friday 13th April.
The idea of the Montagu Cup seems to have come from the miners of Denaby. Three years prior to the fine trophy arriving in South Yorkshire, the colliers of Denaby Main proposed the idea.
Presumably the benefit of the new Cottage Hospital in Mexborough (1890) was a significant improvement for injured miners who would otherwise have had to travel by horse and cart to Doncaster.
Note: the article does not specify that the proposed cup was for football, but we think this is highly likely.
