Mexborough Town
In 1925-26 season Mexborough Town won the Midland League. This was before teh third and fourth tiers of the Football League.
The calibre of the players in this photograph illustrate the quality of football at Hampden Road in the Midalnd League days.
Joe Beresford played for England during his spell at high-flying Aston Villa. He then went on to appear in an FA Cup final for Preston North End. Joe won the Montagu Cup in 1924.
Goalkeeper, Harold Cope, spent the 3 previous seasons to this with Barnsley in the 2nd tier, then the subsequent 4 seasons with Blackburn Rovers in the same division.

Teddy Ashton had 10 seasons at Barnsley shortly after this.

Matt Moralee played in the two consecutive seasons when Sheffield Wednesday won the League title (although admittedly only 1 appearance in each season).
Mark Purcell played in the league too, for Barrow. So 8 of the team played in the football league (plus the trainer!).
