Before a crowd of 2500 the final between Town, looking to win their first Montagu Cup and Edlington playing in their first final, kicked-off at 11.15am. This was the 74th final, refereed by Brian Fletcher (Swinton), and Edlington took the lead on 17 minutes through Cyril Parker who was unmarked as the ball was played into the penalty area allowing him time to beat Cooper in the Town goal. Mexborough levelled on 24 minutes when Edlington goalkeeper Hayes came out but couldn't reach a Steve Kulic free kick leaving Peter Pettit to head in despite the challenge of defender Malhoney.
The winning goal came in the 63rd minute when a Kulic pass was turned in by Smith. Town player/manager Tony Lowe came on as a sustitute for the final 7 minutes before captain Brian Tonks was presented with the trophy by Mr Tom Dennett the chairman of the Mexborough & Wath Hospitals Comforts Fund. The attendance raised £400 for the competition.
