Barry Harwood

Barry played in some Montagu Cup matches for Swinton Athletic before becoming a referee. He then emigrated to Australia where he officiating at the highest level - in 4 full international matches.

One of these was Australia 2 Czechoslovakia 2 in Melbourne (1980) with the famous Antonin Panenka in the Czech team (cheeky 1976 penalty).  

The other three international matches were ...
Australia 0 USSR 3 (Adelaide, 1975); Australia 1 Israel 1 (Melbourne, 1977); Argentina 2 Saudi Arabia 2 (Adelaide, 1988)

Barry was in the middle for Western Australia 0 Dynamo Moscow 5 who had the great Lev Yashin in goal.  Yashin is regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the sport.

Lots of British teams toured 'down under' and had Barry in charge, including: Aberdeen (1974), Chelsea (1974), Manchester United (1975), Rangers (1975), Spurs (1976 & 85), Sunderland (1976), Middlesborough (1977), Dundee (1978), Nottingham Forest (1984), Milwall (1989).Soccer.

​Barry's bio:
Barry went to Kilnhurst C of E primary school and Rawmarsh (haugh Road) Secondary School. He played in the football school teams.

Barry also captained Rotherham Schoolboys. He as offered apprenticeships at Rotherham United and Doncaster Rovers but his parents were not in favour, they told Barry to get a 'real job'.

Barry did play with Rotherham United Under 18's Northern Intermediate team, Swinton Athletic and Denaby United.

In 1963 Barry took the Sheffield and Hallamshire referees exam, advancing to Grade 1 by 1966, which is when he emigrated to Perth, Western Australia where he continued to referee.
